Paul David Power
Playwright, director, and actor Paul David Power is an artist for whom disability informs but does not define his work.
As an artist who self identifies as living with a disability, Paul is committed to strengthening the representation of theatre artists who live with a disability in Newfoundland and Labrador. He has spent the past 25 years working across the country as a writer, playwright, actor, and director. Paul currently heads his own Newfoundland-based company – Power Productions – a professional theatre company dedicated to the development of works and artists with a focus on the disabled Deaf and MAD Arts domain. His work as Artistic Director of Power Productions includes advising on accessibility within the local arts community and developing talent through the creation of active opportunities, both on stage and behind the scenes.
Paul describes his play Crippled as “a love story where one of the people happens to live with a disability.”
“I wanted to share my story and the universal themes of grief to a larger audience. Most of all I wanted to demonstrate that a play about the disability experience and a disabled character is a viable product for touring.”
From childhood conflicts to overwhelming adult loss and grief, from despair to hope, Crippled presents the commonality of our inner struggles with personal demons, framed against our exterior struggles with the perceptions of others.
