Hodan Ismaël Youssouf
Hodan Ismaël Youssouf is exploring the concept of accessibility in the arts to find new approaches to acting.
Masque is a video creation by Hodan Youssouf. Hodan continues to “deconstruct the concept of accessibility” with this new work by asking:
“What if it was hearing people who had access to signed music?”
Commissioned by the company Joe Jack & John, Hodan was inspired by past explorations around the concept of ‘deaf music,’ defined in the research and creation project Nos mains qui vibrent led by Véro Leduc.
Born in Somalia, Hodan Ismaël Youssouf was born Deaf. As there were no adapted services for Deaf people in this country, her parents decided to send her and her hearing siblings to France, where they were received as refugees. In 1989, with her siblings, Hodan immigrated to Canada. A committed poet and actress, she has participated in a multitude of projects over the years, both in the hearing and Deaf communities, in Quebec and abroad.
